LONDON – British Prime Minister (PM) Rishi Sunak promised to send Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine to support the country against Russia.
According to the BBC page, Sunak conveyed this directly to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky by telephone in early January 2023.
This step was taken as a form of intensifying British support for Ukraine. What are the specifications for the Challenger 2 tank that will be given by the British?
The Challenger 2 tank is a British defense system developed by BAE Land System. This tank has served as the main battle tank of the British Army since 1994. According to the specifications on the Military Today website, the Challenger 2 has a capacity of 4 crew and has a main weapon in the form of a 120 mm gun.

This tank also weighs 62.5 tons and is 11.55 meters long. The height of the tank reaches 2.49 meters with a width of 3.52 meters.
In the mobility segment, the Challenger 2 is supported by a Perkins CV12 TCA diesel engine with a maximum speed of 56 km/h and a range of up to 500 km. The Challenger 2 is 60% maneuverable and 30% sideways.

The 120 mm L30 gun which is the main weapon of this tank also comes from BAE Systems Land. In January 2004, BAE Land Systems was awarded a contract to develop a new 120 mm smoothbore gun for the tank.
Challenger 2 is considered the safest defense system because its self-protection system is proven to be good.
This tank is capable of providing very high protection for its crew, especially from firearms attacks. Challenger 2 uses second generation Chobham composite armor. There are also nuclear, chemical and biological protection systems in this tank.
The presence of this tank on the Ukrainian battlefield is certainly a tough opponent for Russian war machines.
