The Third Finance Commission of the Permanent Commission of the Congress of the Union, approved with 10 votes in favor and 6 abstentions from the opposition, the opinion with the appointment of Omar Mejia Castelazo as deputy governor of Bank of Mexico (Banxico).
The opinion is expected to go to the Plenary session of the Permanent Commission that meets in San Lázaro to protest the charge. The Secretariat of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP), reported on January 5, 2023 that the nomination of Omar Mejía Castelazo as a member of the governing board was sent to Congress to replace Gerardo Esquivel.
Mejía is an economist graduated from the UNAM where he carried out the thesis “Study on the performance of public debt management for the Federal District for the period 2006-2012” from the DeMPA perspective, which is the acronym in English for Debt management performance assessment, a methodology used for the debt management performance evaluation.
According to 2014 theses records from the Maximum House of Studieshis adviser was Luz Aydee González Alvarado, Professor at the Faculty of Economics.
Similarly, his Bachelor’s degree in Economics, issued in 2018, can be corroborated in the SEP’s National Registry of Professionals, where it appears with professional ID number 11039275. Additionally, he has also completed master’s studies at UNAM, but does not have the title of said postgraduate.
When the nomination was announced, the Ministry of Finance highlighted that it has a solid academic base and extensive experience to comply with this responsibility. He reported that he has 20 years of experience in the analysis of monetary policy, financial administration, public and banking finance, government treasury and infrastructure projects. This is due to the fact that he currently serves as an adviser to the Banxico’s governing board, an institution that he joined in 2019 as an adviser to the deputy governor, Galia Borja.
During his appearance before deputies and senators of the Third Labor Committee, Omar Mejía promised to preserve the autonomy of Banxico and act with all rigor to return to price stability.
