The Australian Open set an attendance record this year. 839,192 tennis fans came to Melbourne Park. This makes it by far the most visited grand slam tournament. Including the qualifying week, the total number of visitors to the tennis tournament was 902,312.
The three other grand slams cannot match those numbers. Wimbledon attracted 515,164 spectators last year, Roland Garros had 613,500 viewers and the US Open recorded 776,120 visitors.
The Australian Open broke the 2020 record when it had 812,174 visitors inside the gates. The day record was also broken this year with 94,854 visitors. That is more than 1000 more than the previous record of 93,709 in 2020.
Tournament director Craig Tiley expects the Australian Open to pass the 1 million visitor mark next year. “In advance, the reports of attendance were very gloomy, as greats like Roger Federer, Serena Williams and Ashleigh Barty were missing. But we see that people have come in large numbers because they want to be entertained and tennis is proving to be a great attraction,” he said in the Melbourne Age newspaper.
