the future of Square Enix seems to be more than clear. After the sale of its western studios to the Embracer Group, and the failure of AAA games like Marvel’s Avengers, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy or Forspoken (although it’s still early), the studio will focus on role-playing.
On one side is the saga Final Fantasy, buque insignia de Square Enix that it continues to live off the success of the MMO Final Fantasy 14 and that this summer it will launch the highly anticipated Final Fantasy XVI.
We also didn’t forget about Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis or the sequel to the 2020 remake, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. However, Square Enix shouldn’t neglect its great HD-2D games.

Octopath Traveler II -Trailer with Ochette & Castti
We were in for a big surprise with works like Octopath Traveler (whose sequel comes out next month) or Triangle Strategy, but we must also mention the wonderful remake of Live a Live, which to date was unreleased in the West.
Behind all those games is the Team Asano, one of Square Enix’s development teamswhich specializes in this treatment halfway between 2D and high definition.
Upcoming Team Asano games?
Octopath Traveler II will arrive in a few weeks, a new game produced by Team Asano that will try to repeat the success of the 2018 game. Last year we had Triangle Strategy, a marvel of the tactical role-playing genre.
At Square Enix they wonder what will be the new project of Team Asanoand to decide it they have asked the players for help through a survey.
Although the survey is in Japanese, anyone can participate at this link. Most of the questions don’t attract attention… excepting two of them.
These two are: What kind of games would you like Team Asano to work on in the future? and What games would you like to see remastered or remade in the next few years?
It seems pretty clear that Live a Live left a good taste in Square Enix’s mouth. Following said remake, Team Asano is ready to take on another JRPG classic. and update it to our days.
In this ResetEra thread we can see different suggestions from some players. Of course, that does not mean that Team Asano develops a remake of a specific title, but it is better to ask for it just in case.
A great example is the possible return of Xenogearssaga from the PS1 era that Monolith Soft took as a direct inspiration for Xenoblade Chronicles.
Other players ask the return of Chrono Trigger as an HD-2D remake, which would undoubtedly be a fan’s dream come true. Furthermore, it is one of the most expensive retro games out there.
Our favorite PS1 games. Review of the first PlayStation on Hobby Podcast and live!
Do you want more examples? Well, here are a few: Vagrant Story, Super Mario RPG, Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy VI, Einhander, Star Ocean 2 or Final Fantasy Tactics.
Team Asano is one of the most talented development teams at Square Enix. His next game will surely leave us speechless, so we can only cross our fingers that the chosen one is a timeless classic of the role.
