Matthijs van Nieuwkerk is participating in research into working conditions at the talk show De Wereld Draait Door (DWDD), which he presented from 2005 to 2020. Van Nieuwkerk’s spokesperson confirmed this to NOS on Friday. The research is commissioned by the NPO and carried out by an external party. Van Nieuwkerk’s spokesperson was not immediately available for NRC.
Van Nieuwkerk was discredited last week after an article by de Volkskrant, which showed that both Van Nieuwkerk and several editors-in-chief have caused an unsafe working atmosphere at the program for years. Van Nieuwkerk is said to have had extreme tantrums in these years and there would have been “structural transgressive behavior”. Broadcaster BNNVARA received various signals about this, but did not intervene.
On Monday, the NPO announced that it would have an external and independent investigation carried out into the working conditions at DWDD. At the request of State Secretary Gunay Uslu (Culture and Media, D66), the public broadcaster will also draw up an action plan together with the broadcasters to guarantee a safe working environment. Frans Klein, video director of the NPO and former editor-in-chief of BNNVARA, temporarily puts down his work “to prevent a discussion about the independence of the research”.
Van Nieuwkerk has since left BNNVARA. According to the presenter, further cooperation is impossible if his employer “openly doubts [zijn] sincerity”. Omroep NTR, where Van Nieuwkerk would present the programs Top 2000 quiz and Top 2000 a gogo, has announced that Van Nieuwkerk will not be seen there.
