In response to the resolution of the European Parliament passed yesterday with 494 votes in favor, 58 against and 44 abstentions which defines Russia as a “supporter of terrorism”, the pro-Russian group of hackers Killnet hacked the systems of the Eurochamber. The institution’s spokesman, Jaume Duch, gave the news and raised the alarm with a tweet. “The availability of the Eurochamber website is currently compromised from the outside due to high external network traffic. This traffic is related to a Distributed Denial of Service (Ddos) attack. Parliament’s teams are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.” BetterCyber, a company that deals with information security, has confirmed that the paternity of the cyberattack is due to the Russian group “We are Killnet”.
Duch’s intervention had come in the early afternoon, when the wi-fi of the building that houses the plenary in Strasbourg had been interrupted for several minutes, making the website of the European institution unreachable. In the resolution voted yesterday referring to the war in Ukraine, it is underlined that “the intentional attacks and atrocities by Russian forces and their proxies against citizens, the destruction of civilian infrastructure, and other serious violations of international and humanitarian law are all acts of terror and war crimes. For this, they declare Russia a state sponsor of terrorism using terrorist means.” The president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, intervened on Twitter: “The European Parliament is under a sophisticated cyber attack. A pro-Kremlin group has claimed responsibility. Our IT experts are standing up and protecting our systems. This, after we proclaimed Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism”.
Anonymous Russian and Killnet have claimed responsibility for the attack on their Telegram groups, writing that they “officially recognize the European Parliament as a sponsor of homosexuality”, along the lines of what Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry wrote: “I propose to recognize the European as sponsor of idiocy”.
