The German Ministry of Health said that European Union (EU) drug regulators could authorize the use of vaccines that are effective against two variants of the coronavirus.
The European Medicines Agency is expected to meet on September 1 to consider a vaccine that would provide protection against both the parent virus and the Omicron variant, also known as BA.1, Minister Karl Lauterbach said. The EU agency is likely to meet to review a combined vaccine against the original virus and the BA.5 variant, which is responsible for the latest global surge in COVID-19 cases. He added that Germany has purchased sufficient quantities of both vaccines and can start applying them one day after receiving authorization..
The US Food and Drug Administration has said that combination vaccines, known as “bivalent” or “multivalent” injections, will allow boosters to retain the proven benefits of the original vaccines.
