We have all been through that moment of tension where some video game has generated physical reactions in our body, causing even the least impressionable gamers to jump scared playing a horror title.
Moments that in some people can create different responses depending on their physical or mental condition, either because they get scared easily or because they have a health problem. Something that leads us to think, could one of these jumps of terror lead us to, for example, die playing a video game?
And as they have pointed out on the Hypertext site, citing a study recently published in Healthline, apparently playing titles that have quite scary content with intense action could lead to death, although clearly not immediately.
This is due to the so-called “flight or fight instinct” that humans share with all animals, which in moments when we feel in danger, the brain is bombarded with enormous amounts of dopamine and adrenaline. Two neurotransmitters that could be activated when you are playing a horror or action video game and that by generating stress to our entire body, could lead people with, for example, heart problems, to have quite serious responses.
You can read: Spending a lot of time playing video games has no negative impact on gamers, unless you play more than 10 hours a day
Something that is also shared by a study in the New England Journal of Medicine, which indicates that “Electronic games have been shown to significantly increase the heart rate of participants. Mental stress and heightened emotion have been shown to shorten the ventricular action potential and are known triggers of cardiac arrhythmias, especially long QT syndrome.”
So although it sounds a bit exaggerated and perhaps obvious, it is important to make it clear that according to these scientific studies, people who have any health condition should take much better care of themselves. Or better yet, stay away from some kind of scary games that maybe in the short term, will lead to their game over.
