The regional governor of Puno, Germán Alejo Apaza, insists on promoting the importation of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) from Bolivia for the southern regions of the country. For this reason, he arrived in the Arequipa region to create a development agenda together with the governor of Arequipa, Kimmerlee Gutiérrez. Among the points debated is lowering the costs of the domestic ball by decreeing a free import of the input with the Bolivian company Yacimientos Petroliferos Fiscales Bolivianos (YPFB).
“We are managing the importation of gas from Bolivia and we want to involve the southern regions so that in the end the peoples are the beneficiaries,” said Alejo. Together with Gutiérrez, they agreed that his technical teams prepare a report for this procedure and send it to the National Executive. He said that as regions they seek to unify and that through a decree free importation is in force. Alejo maintained that if he achieved his purpose, the ball in the highlands would cost S/ 25 to S/ 30 and in Arequipa between S/ 35 to S/ 40 due to transportation costs.
It must be remembered that YPFB replied to Governor Alejo that there are Peruvian LPG importers since 2014 and even so the cost did not decrease. The authority maintained that YPFB is willing to sell the gas and that it was even offered three alternatives. The core point would be to decree tax exemptions on imports. “The problem is on the Peruvian side,” he pointed out.
For Alejo, Petroperú must carry out a feasibility study on the subject.
The Arequipa authority indicated that they agree to promote this proposal. While Alejo Apaza added that the objective is also for the southern regions to unite for the development of their peoples and not be isolated. In the meeting, it was also proposed to ask the national government to resume mass use of Camisea gas and reactivate the Gasoducto del Sur.
In addition, it was proposed to direct the project for the construction of the highway that connects Arequipa-Juliaca-Puno. Gutiérrez proposed to include the project in the National Logistics and Infrastructure Plan 2030. The Arequipa authority stated that they will seek to make a claim to the Government because only S/ 10 million was allocated for road investments in the south.
