A woman was sentenced last Friday to life in prison with a minimum sentence of 18 years for murdering her 2-year-old son the day her ex-husband asked the family court for joint custody in the United Kingdom.
Carol Hodgson, 40, would have suffocated her little one on February 2 at her home in the town of Guisborough. After committing the crime, she tried to kill herself with a kitchen knife, reports nypost.com.

The woman was found by her mother with two neck injuries and on the verge of cardiac arrest. Next to her lay the body of her son. “Just let me die,” she told the paramedics. They took her to a hospital and she survived.
Before being declared dead, the little boy underwent cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for 40 minutes, but to no avail.
“You don’t want to see this. Just call the police! I left. So sorry. I love you, ”said one of the notes the woman left for her mother. According to the authorities, another of her letters stated that “taking her son with her” was the only way to protect him.

Carol Hodgson pleaded guilty to her son’s death at Teesside Crown Court. Although she never revealed to the police how she killed her son, forensic experts described the death as uncertain and assume that he was suffocated with a vacuum cleaner bag.
For his part, prosecutor Alistair MacDonald mentioned that the letters left by the woman indicated that it had been a premeditated murder and not by “the heat of the moment.”
He also said the father, identified as Stefan Green, had not been allowed to see his son since early 2020, when the couple split and Hodgson moved without giving him his new address.
“It is not a coincidence that she carried out the murder on the same morning that the family court was due to hold a custody hearing,” he said.

“He was my whole world”
During the trial, Hodgson’s ex-husband made a moving statement to the judges. “He was my whole world. I used to call him my little star. I miss hearing him laugh and having him in my arms. The shocking nature of the loss has made everything worse. Now I suffer from stress and night terrors. I couldn’t work and I was sick since everything happened (…). Some days I find myself thinking that maybe it would be easier if I wasn’t here anymore. I never got to see his first steps or hear his first words. All of that was stolen from me.”
Before handing down his sentence, Judge Paul Watson described the crime as “horrific and truly horrific.” “There is no doubt that it was a premeditated murder. You deliberately killed Daniel and then you tried to kill yourself. You should have put the bag over his head until you were sure he was dead,” he finished.
