However, it may not always be the best possible option if we want to travel from one point to another. Basically, because sometimes the price may be higher than we expected. Therefore, the trip that we had organized “economic”, will no longer be so if we have to add the toll of the idea and the return. Luckily, there are different ways to know the price that it will cost us to go through a toll highway and it will even be possible calculate the route that we will have to follow so that the journey is as cheap as possible.
What highways are toll roads in Spain?
In Spain, there are several roads that we find that are toll roads, that is, they have installed different toll booths in which we will have to pay to be able to access said road. In this case, we find that they are not just any roads, as could be the case of national roads, but rather motorways.
However, since 2018, as we will see later, some of toll roads they have been opening up, that is, they have begun to be free. In addition, it must be taken into account that not all roads are toll roads in Spain, since many think that highways are, but at the moment, this is not the case.
Therefore, in our country we find different sections that correspond to toll motorways that appear on the different signs that indicate directions such as AP. Although, as we said, some of these have become completely free for use by any user without having to pay anything. However, and as we will see later, there are some roads that we will find at different points that are exceptions, such as the case of paid radial roads or even highways.
All national toll roads
Now that we know which are the Spanish roads that we will have to pay to use, it is time to see all the current toll motorways that we can find on the peninsula. And it is that, if you had imagined that through the Canary archipelago or the Balearic Islands you would find a toll, we have already made it clear that you will not. And so that you can clearly see which ones require payment, we leave you here the toll motorways in Spain:
AP-46 HighwayHigh of the Pedrizas – Malaga. AP-51 Highway, AP-6connection with Avila. AP-53 HighwaySantiago de Compostela – Alto de Santo Domingo. AP-6 motorwayVillalba – Villacastín – Adanero. However, there are others that they are also paid, but that have their own rate system and different from the rest that we have just named. Although, in this case, the ones we will see next will be free at night, from 00:00 to 06:00. And, specifically, they are these:
See all their prices
The price of toll roads in Spain it is always visible through the website of the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda. In it, you can check what each section of the highway that we are going to use during a certain trip will cost us. Therefore, once we enter its page, we will have to click on a specific highway and look at the following data:
fare price: peak, valley and normal. It will depend on the date on which we are going to enter the AP and also on the time. Though, not all toll roads have this measure established. Look at the forward and reverse path: Depending on the point at which we enter the AP or exit the toll road, it will be one price or another. Heavy or light vehicles: the cost of the toll will also change depending on the vehicle that we are going to use. light: Motorcycles with or without sidecar. Tourism vehicles without a trailer or with a trailer without a twin wheel (double tyre). Vans and vans with two axles (four wheels). Two-axle minibuses (four wheels). heavy 1: Two-axle trucks and coaches. Trucks and coaches with two axles and with one axle trailer. Three-axle trucks and coaches. Passenger cars, vans, vans and microbuses (all of them with two axles, four wheels), with a single-axle trailer with a twin wheel (double tire). heavy 2: Trucks and coaches, with or without a trailer, with a total of four axles or more. Passenger cars, vans, vans and microbuses (all of them with two axles, four wheels), with a trailer with two or more axles and at least one axle with a twin wheel.
Toll highways that are free
As we have already been warning you, not all AP roads are currently toll roads in Spain. This is because some of these ended their concession between 2018 and 2021. Therefore, the Government of Spain put an end to these sections in which drivers had to pay a fee if they wanted to use them. Therefore, it can now be circulated completely free of charge. Specifically, we find these:
The AP-1, Autopista del Norte, which connects the towns of Armiñán (Vitoria) and Burgos. The AP-2 between Zaragoza and El Vendrell. The AP-4, which links the cities of Seville and Cádiz. The AP-7 in the sections that run between Alicante and Tarragona, Montmeló and El Papiol and Tarragona and La Jonquera. Freeways C-32 y C-33which are the responsibility of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
And highways cost money?
Not at the moment, but they will. The plan of the Government of Spain it is to impose a new payment system for all national highways, and everything before 2024. It is even thought that this same idea will be progressively extended to the rest of the roads of the main network of the state. Therefore, sooner or later, the highways will become toll-free, while the motorways will cease to be over the years.
However, from that plan of the Spanish government, it did not take long for the first toll road in Spain. Specifically, it is in operation in the Basque Country and costs 2.5 euros, we refer to the A-636, known as the Deskarga motorway, in the section that joins the towns of Beasain and Bergara. In total, it affects a section of up to 15.5 kilometers. In addition, to speed up its use, electronic payment is now allowed, using electronic tolls so that it is not necessary to stop at the respective traditional toll booths.
Calculate the price of the route
However, if we want to calculate the route, including the price of the tolls that we can find along the way, it will always be possible thanks to different web pages or applications that make it easier than ever. In this case, we bring you two alternatives that will be of great help. Therefore, you only have to follow the steps that we will give you so that you can correctly configure your trip and know the price that you will have to pay for the toll.
With Via Michelin
One of the most used options is the famous Michelin Guide, which not only has a web page that we can access from any device, such as a computer, but also has a mobile app (for Android and iOS) that will help us calculate quickly how much it will cost us to go through a toll, if it is necessary. In addition, it will let us choose between different options, the cheapest or the fastest route that, at all times, will depend on the cost that we want to assume. Therefore, once inside, we must do the following:
First, we must enter your website or application for mobile. Put the address from where you leave and the destination to which you are going. You will be able to fill in the data of your vehicle to calculate how much gasoline or diesel you will have to refuel, and the price that it will cost you. Click on Search. In the options, it will tell you the available routes, in addition to the price that it will cost you. Within the option with tollwill tell you the price you must pay.
Another of the most used options by those who want to make a trip as easy as possible, without having to think about where to find cheap gas stations, avoid tolls or the fastest route, is Waze. In this case, we also find that it has its own web page in which to consult the possible routes that we will have within our reach.
However, from its website we will not see the different prices of the possible toll roads that we will find along the way. Although, it must be taken into account that the cost that appears is based on the information offered by the Waze community. In any case, if you want to use this software, you can do it from a car with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, or from an Android or iOS phone:
We indicate the exit pointa, although it will be set automatically if we have the GPS activated. We set the destination. Later, you have to check the route and the price of the toll on the screen of the estimated time of arrival.
Avoid tolls when traveling
If we go on a trip, it is possible that we use the browser of the mobile or, if we have it, of the car. In these cases, one of the most used options will be use Google Maps, one of the most used software by users to be able to travel without getting lost. Well, this program will help us avoid tolls at all times in the simplest way.
All this is thanks to the data network of the gigantic United States company, since it makes available to us different options to make the trip just as we want at any time. In addition, it will only take us a few minutes to customize the route that we are going to take. Therefore, once we have it on our mobile or in the car, these are the steps that we must follow to configure it.
We enter the desired location in the search engine, although we can also mark it directly on the map if we know the exact point. After this, click on How to get. Swipe up and check if there is an alert that tells us that it includes tolls. In case it does tell us this, we will have to lower this window and try if there is an alternative route without toll. If there isn’t any toll free alternative, we will need to adjust the route options. We will only have to click on the three points that appear in the upper right > route options. Finally, activate the option avoid tolls with the mobile.
In this way, we no longer have to follow the initial route that Google Maps had set for us, but now it will show us different possibilities without having to go through a toll highway to get to the destination we want. So we will be able to save some money during the round trip.
