Madrid. An international team of scientists, led by the Institute of Biomedicine of Seville and the Institute of Integrative Systems Biology, discovered a mathematical principle that explains how cells connect to form tissues, an important step in understanding the formation of organs during embryonic development and pathologies associated with this process. The work, which was published in the journal Cell Systems, used the fruit fly as a model, and is expected to have implications for the creation of artificial tissues and organs in the laboratory, which is a great challenge for biology and biomedicine.
The specialists considered mathematical and/or biophysical principles in 3D and combined experiments with fly tissues and computational models of tubular tissues, with which they developed a biophysical model that relates for the first time the geometry of the tissue and the physical properties of the cells with how they are connected to each other.
