SpaceX has a new satellite internet service. This is Starlink Maritime and as one can anticipate from its name, it is a service dedicated to ships. Through this service, its users will be able to have internet with a download speed of up to 350 Mbps while offshore.
Not bad at all, considering that having internet on the high seas is complicated. However, this new service also comes at a great price. One tall enough to be as exclusive as some yachts. Of course, those who can afford a boat will likely find this price interesting.
Internet at sea for $5,000 a month
Maritime Starlink costs $5,000 per month, although like other SpaceX services, users will be able to pause their subscription when not in use. Of course, the payment is made month by month, so it will not be useful to choose individual days.
The payment does not stop there, because the hardware to launch the service costs $10,000. To get an idea, the base cost of Starlink is about $110 per month and the initial hardware is $599. That is, Starlink Maritime is about 20 times more expensive than Starlink for home.
SpaceX explains that Starlink Maritmo “allows you to connect from some of the most remote waters in the world”, although its coverage is currently limited to coastal waters of the US, Europe, Australia and some Latin American countries. Starlink offers a complete map in the areas where there is coverage, including the entire Mediterranean.
In the case of the central Atlantic, SpaceX promises that from the end of 2022 it will begin to provide coverage. It will not be until the end of 2023 when the rest of the world, except for very specific areas, is expected to obtain coverage.
Elon Musk explains that Maritime Starlink antennas differ from those of residential Starlink. They are “high-performance dual devices” that can stay connected through heavy storms and rough seas. The price is high, but according to Musk himself, to date at SpaceX they have been paying about $150,000 a month for a “much worse” connection on their ships.
