Within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor is probably one of the characters that has changed the most. The version of the character since Taika Waititi gave it a facelift in 2017 is noticeably different from the serious, Norse Asgardian of the first installments.
However, to this day, Thor is still credited with starring in one of the worst rated Marvel movies: Thor: The Dark World.
The 2013 film was conceived to be a sequel to the original 2011 film, directed by Kenneth Branagh. However, the filmmaker was not available to repeat as director. After a brief search where it was valued to Brian Kirk (Game of Thrones) to direct, the chosen one ended up being Patty Jenkins.
At first it was all praise and good words, but Patty Jenkisn took a very short time to jump ship, forcing Marvel Studios to find another director. Alan Taylor ended up taking the baton definitively.
Thor: The Dark World is an easily forgettable movie for many factors, all of which point to the studio’s meddling in the creative process.

In fact, Patty Jenkins commented on IndieWire in 2017, while promoting Wonder Woman, that creative differences were the cause of her departure from the project. The filmmaker explained her intention to create a space opera with a touch of Romeo and Juliet by the separation of Thor and Jane Foster.
Later, in 2020, the director explained in Vanity Fair that if she had gone ahead with the changes that Marvel proposed, it could have ruined her career. However, Jenkins has nothing but good things to say about her days at Marvel StudiosExcept that one, of course.
The Thor sequel turned out the way it did, and it forced a revulsion that would come in the form of Ragnarok in 2017, with Taika Waititi at the helm.
Although divisive in many sectors of the fandom, Waititi has gained the trust of Marvel executives, who will see how the new installment premieres tomorrow: Thor: Love and Thunder.
Do you think Thor: The Dark World would have gone better with Patty Jenkins’ plans? Is that a harbinger of the limbo Star Wars: Rogue Squadron finds itself in right now?
