Although he had been wanted for some time by bounty hunters and the authorities, the most feared buccaneer of the seven seas has reappeared to the roar of the cannons: Skull and Bones, Ubisoft’s pirate game, has been presented with a video that delves into its gameplay.
But before going into detail about all the news that we have unearthed, thanks to the fact that Ubisoft has given us a map that has allowed us to know the content of the presentation in advance, let’s go with the good news: Skull and Bones will be released on November 8 for PS5, Xbox Series X | S and PC, in addition to Stadia and Luna. Lower the sails!
Skull and Bones: Cinematic Trailer
The first thing they make clear to us is that we are facing a “open sea pirate experience“, that is to say: that we can navigate with total freedom using our ship and undertaking all kinds of activities typical of a pirate.
Now, as soon as we start the adventure and customize the appearance of our character, we will not be more than a few little grumlets and we will have at our disposal a boat to which the term “boat” came in handy.
That is why it is important to fulfill contracts to increase our infamy and gain access to better weapons and armor. But, above all, knowing how to choose carefully what we accept… because we don’t want to face some old sea wolves in those conditions.
When exploring, we can go out to hunt wild animals, such as crocodiles, extract wood and minerals to make new objects, find treasures using treasure maps… Or decide our next target using the spyglasswhich will provide us with valuable information.
Of course, we will not always be able to navigate calmly; In addition to facing inclement weather, like storms and giant wavesfrom time to time it will be time to get your hands dirty and light the fuse of the cannons to face other pirates.
Naval combat is at the core of Skull and Bones, so get ready to swerve at full speed and fire volleys. According to those responsible, it is a “visceral, fast-paced and very satisfying” combat. Come on, who will bet on a more arcade control.
We will have at our disposal a wide variety of boats and each one will offer a different style of play: They will be faster but with less firepower, slower but with great defense… You know how it goes.
We will also have many weapons options at our disposal, such as the aforementioned cannon barrages, but also ballistae, Greek fire… All with the aim of sowing chaos on the waters. Of course, we will also have the possibility of boarding the enemy shipswhich will also bring us greater rewards.
In checking the ship, it has come to our attention that we can alternate the control between the different parts, change of camera included.
For example, when we are sailing, it seems that it will be advisable to control the ship from the lookout position, as it will allow us to take a good look at the surroundings. But we can also put ourselves at the helm in the first person, control the cannons…
But before going to sea, it will be very important to stock up, especially supplies and ammunition. If we are not careful and do not pay attention to the morale of our crew, they could mutiny.
We do this from the different pirate posts that we will find throughout the world-sea of Skull and Bones. We explore these places on foot, controlling our character in the third personwhich will allow us to get even more fully into the pirate experience.
Infamy acts as a progression system in Skull and Bones. and, as you can imagine, it is obtained by completing missions (among other things). The greater the infamy, the greater the repertoire of tools at our disposal and the more feared we will be in the seven seas.
But infamy also determines our player level compared to other pirates. This means that if we decide to attack a player with a level of infamy much lower than ours, the rewards will be minimal… and the losses huge, in case we fail. It’s Skull and Bones’ way of inviting us to go for a “bigger fish.”
It is also likely that we will find other players in the middle of the fray, at which point we can decide to join the fight to help one of the parties, eliminate them all or continue browsing and pretend that we have not seen anything. It depends on us.
Now, be very careful if we decide to become the most feared pirates of the seven seas, because this will attract the attention of privateers, bounty hunters from Skull and Bones.
If we are defeated, we will drop the cargo we were transporting; if we manage to reach the place where we fell before other players, we can recover it (is Skull and Bones the Dark Souls of pirate games?)
And don’t worry, if you want to enjoy a quiet experience without fearing being constantly attacked by other players, Skull and Bones will give us the possibility to choose between playing on servers with or without PVP.
In that sense and if we wish, it will also be perfectly possible to play alone, without making contact with other players… But we were assured that the core of Skull and Bones is social gaming and that the experience is much more satisfying if we work together.
In relation to this, and to conclude, they explained to us that Skull and Bones will receive post-launch support (Ubisoft usually takes great care of its games in this regard), which will include free content, world events with exclusive rewards such as new ships, weapons or furniture… In short, we won’t get bored after becoming pirate kings.
So now you know: if you have always dreamed of living the pirate life, Skull and Bones promises to fulfill all your buccaneer fantasies. We remind you that it will sail on November 8.
