The market for mineral waters Italians runs and resists, at least for now, the negative economic situation that is characterizing Italy and Europe and which sees the purchasing power of consumers increasingly eroded by the growing inflation. Not surprisingly, almost one in three consumers choose mineral water to be purchased for home consumption based on the presence of offers and promotions.
In the 2020 consumption of mineral water in Italy they recorded a contraction of 3.7% in volume compared to the previous year, a dynamic mainly attributable to the drop in sales in the Ho.re.ca., a channel severely affected by closures and restrictions and which, before the Covid emergency , accounted for 15% of national consumption by volume.
These are some of the ideas that emerged from an investigation by Mineral Water Monitorthe Nomisma Observatory dedicated to the mineral water sector, which involved 1,000 Italian buyers of packaged water with the aim of understanding the consumption model and new market trends, including functional waters.
With the gradual return to normal, the relaxation of limitations due to the containment of the pandemic and the recovery of tourist flows, in 2021 the consumption of bottled water in restaurants and bars on the Peninsula began to regain share and the market began to grow again, exceeding 136 million hectoliters overall (+ 4.9% compared to 2020).
