Daniele Gatti will be the new principal conductor of the prestigious Dresden Staatskapelle orchestra. This was decided by the same orchestra that met yesterday with the Saxon Minister of Culture and Tourism, Barbara Klepsh, to elect the successor of Christian Thielemann, whose contract with the Staatskapelle expires in July 2024. “I am extremely honored and moved for this invitation that comes from one of the greatest orchestras in the world, whose history, prestige and quality are unanimously recognized. It will be an even more intense joy to return to conduct them next 10, 11 and 12 July in their season “, says Gatti.
The Staatskapelle is one of the oldest orchestras in the world: it was founded in 1548, and was conducted by some of the greatest conductors ever, from Carl Maria von Weber to Richard Wagner, through Richard Strauss, who in addition to conducting it entrusted many world premieres of his works. Rudolf Kempe, Lovro von Matačić, Herbert Blomstedt and Bernard Haitink are among the directors who have permanently guided it. Two Italians were also principal directors: Giuseppe Sinopoli, who was in office at the time of his death in 2001, and Fabio Luisi who was from 2007 to 2010.
Daniele Gatti made his debut on the podium of the Dresden Staatskapelle in February 2000, invited by Giuseppe Sinopoli, then principal conductor, with music by Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Hindemith and Brahms. In the following years, a fruitful collaboration continued on a regular basis. Recently, in November 2021 Gatti conducted the orchestra as part of the Salzburg Easter Festival (which was moved to the autumn due to the pandemic) with great acclaim from audiences and critics. On 10, 11 and 12 July 2022 he will return to Dresden to interpret Mahler’s Ninth Symphony in the twelfth concert of the current season.
“With the election of Daniele Gatti as the next principal conductor, we are not only continuing the extremely fruitful cooperation of the past years, but we are also earning one of today’s most renowned conductor personalities for the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden. Staatskapelle’s special sound, his compelling musical vision and, last but not least, his international reputation, have made him the orchestra’s favorite candidate from the very beginning. We are sure that, together with Maestro Gatti as principal conductor, we will be well provided and able to face the future with the same high artistic level as in the past “, declares the Saxon Orchestra Council.
“With Daniele Gatti – says Nora Schmid, designated artistic director of the Semperoper in Dresden – the musicians of the Sächsische Staatskapelle have chosen today as their future principal conductor an artist who, given his enormous musical experience and his ability to perform in various repertoires , sets a significant accent for opera and concerts in Dresden and on the international stages to come. I look forward to working with him, planning and developing the business together, because we have long had inspiring and constructive exchanges ” .
