June 17 – montreal (canada)
There is Max Verstappen’s Red Bull at the top of the timesheet for the first free practice session of the Canadian GP. The Dutch Red Bull in 1’15 “158 preceded the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz, trailing by two tenths. Third time for the Alpine of Fernando Alonso, then there are the Red Bull of Sergio Perez and the second red of Charles Leclerc.
The Ferrari driver’s power unit situation was the center of attention. After the engine failure in Baku, the replacement of the internal combustion unit would certainly have taken place here and this was confirmed. But if the Monegasque had also had to replace the turbo, being the fourth employee, he would have suffered a penalty. At the moment Ferrari has made it known that the fourth turbine will not be used and therefore no penalty.
Penalty that will instead suffer Yuki Tsunoda, who has mounted a fourth complete power unit and therefore the Japanese of the AlphaTauri will start from the phono of the grid. Sixth time for George Russell’s Mercedes which preceded Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin and teammate Lewis amilton. Then Vettel, Ricciardo and Gasly. Sixteenth and 17th times for Bottas and Zhou’s Alfa Romeo.
The other important topic of the day was the technical directive of the FIA with which we try to remedy the problem of porpoising, the hopping on the straight of the cars that is creating many problems of oscillations and shaking for the drivers in the cockpit. The solution adopted makes technicians and drivers discuss, also because introducing regulatory changes mid-season is never easy. But on the other hand, after scenes of painful competitors who came out of the cockpit in Baku, in terms of safety, the theme was presented in an overbearing way. At 11pm the second free practice session.
