The Croatian, former number 12 in the world, returns to success after a complicated period due to a shoulder injury: beaten Elias Ymer in the final
Blessed be the wild card. On the land of Parma, Borna Coric returns to savor the sweet taste of victory and, who knows, to glimpse the light after a complicated period, with the ranking plummeted after being number 12 in the world. The Croatian entered the Italian Challenger from number 255 in the ranking, got the pass to enter the draw and took home the title thanks to the victory in the final against Elias Ymer: 7-6 6-0 the final score. Victory came after those against Agamenone, Cobolli, Zeppieri (trio of Italians) and Lajovic. All players ranked among the top 200 in the world, Lajovic is number 69. Top-200 is now approaching for Coric, who jumped to 203rd place in the ranking thanks to the victory.

Coric returns to raise a trophy four years after the last time: in June 2018, from number 34 in the world, the Croatian beat Roger Federer on the grass in Halle. It seems a lifetime ago, the Swiss was the first player in the ATP ranking and came from the success in Stuttgart in the final against Milos Raonic. After the final in Halle, Coric played (and lost) three more before the one in Parma: in 2018 in Shanghai against Djokovic, in 2019 in St. Petersburg against Medvedev and in 2020 against Rublev again in the Russian tournament. It was October and Coric was number 27 in the world, last May’s shoulder operation compromised the Croatian’s last year.
First step?

Net of the leap forward of 52 positions, the ranking is still to be rebuilt. But who knows that the victory in Parma – after a match won in two sets but lasted over two hours, under the great heat of these days – may not be the first brick to return to the top of world tennis. Also because Coric has not yet turned 26: nothing is lost, Parma is the proof.
