Toyota bZ4X Active – €50,995 Toyota calls the basic version of the bZ4X Active in the Netherlands. Not in Germany, where it is simply called ‘bZ4X’. That matters somewhat, because this unnamed bZ4X is the car you see in the pictures above. The Dutch configurator was not yet online at the time of writing this article. The price list is, so all information in this article is indeed based on the Dutch situation. There are also no external differences between the two basic versions. Toyota recently implemented a price increase for the bZ4X, even before the market launch. As a result, all versions became €2,500 more expensive, but that does not change the mutual relationships. With a price of €50,995, the bZ4X Active is exactly €5,000 cheaper than the next version on the list, the Dynamic. Both versions differ only when it comes to equipment, because the drivetrain of all front-wheel drive bZ4Xs is exactly the same. This means that the entry-level model is also equipped with a 71.4 kWh battery, good for a range of – in theory – 516 km. The chance that you will come close is with the basic version the greatest, because this variant stands on relatively modest 18-inch wheels with streamlined decorative covers. Decorative lids, yes, but there are indeed light-alloy wheels hidden underneath. A heat pump is standard, so this version is not inferior to the others in that area too. On the outside, the Active can be distinguished from the other versions at a glance, at least for those who know what to look for. The entry-level version is the only version that does not have those two striking, spoiler-like bulges above the rear window. This is striking, as this ‘roof spoiler’ is one of the most characteristic features of this model. The headlights also show that this is a simpler version, because the headlights are somewhat simpler and only have one LED lens per side, for example. Another difference: the Active is the only bZ4X without dark rear side windows and rear window. Also, the tailgate only has to be opened and closed manually here and we spot a reversing camera, but no other parking aids. Toyota Bz4X Even inside no one will think that this is the top version. This is mainly due to the relatively small touchscreen, which at 8 inches seems to drown somewhat in its frame intended for a 12.3-inch screen. The striking yoke steering wheel, which is part of the optional steer-by-wire technology, is of course also not present. However, that is not unique, because we do not find this option on the price list at all for the time being. Active drivers sit on full cloth covers and do without seat or steering wheel heating. However, we note climate control with two zones, adaptive cruise control and ‘smart entry’, or boarding and starting without having to remove the key from the pocket. So it is not at all easy to make do in the basic bZ4X, but the Dynamic is nicer on all sides. This more expensive version distinguishes itself with mood lighting, a more luxurious finish of door panels, armrests and center console, the aforementioned heated elements and an electrically adjustable driver’s seat.
