Nio is a Chinese brand that introduced itself to the world in 2016 with the EP9, a crazy 1,360 hp electric hypercar on the market in China. Fortunately, Nio also turned out to have electric cars in more relevant segments. In 2017, it launched its first passenger car with the ES8, a more than 5 meters long electric seven-seat SUV that took over the smaller ES6 with five seats a year later. Another year later, Nio presented with the EC6 a variant of the ES6 with a more strongly sloping roofline and in 2020 and 2021 the brand came with its first EVs that were not SUVs and that were therefore also numbered according to a different name: the ET5 and the ET7. After the introduction of those two low EVs, Nio thinks it’s time for a new SUV. This is the ES7. Nio ES7 The ES7 is 4.91 meters long and falls neatly between the 4.85 meter long ES6 and the 5.02 meter long ES8. The wheelbase of the ES7, at 2.96 meters, is also neatly in the middle between that of its smaller and larger brothers. The ES7 has two 652 hp and 850 Nm strong electric motors, enough to sprint from standstill to a speed of 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds. This makes it Nio’s fastest SUV. Brembo braking should be able to calm the SUV properly again. Nio also supplies the 652 hp powertrain in the ET7 and ES8. It is clear that Nio ES7 will be available with three different battery packs. The smallest measures 75 kWh and provides the SUV with a range of 485 kilometers. Note that this is measured according to the Chinese CLTC method. That Standard Range version gets the 100 kWh Long Range above it, which kicks it to a range of 620 kilometers. Nio also supplies its new SUV – just like the ET5 and ET7 – with an immense 150 kWh package that should give the ES7 a range of more than 850 kilometers. Nio ES7 Good news for caravan trailers: the Nio ES7 is one of the few Chinese passenger cars certified to tow a trailer. Nio optionally supplies a towbar with which you can drag up to 2,000 kilos in silence from A to B. Like many new EVs, the ES7 can charge other electrical devices with a charging capacity of 3.3 kW via a ‘V2L’ (Vehicle to Load) system. From the outside, the ES7 is immediately recognizable as Nio. It has some Nio’s X-bar front with flat LED daytime running lights, LED headlights underneath and relatively little optical fuss. At the back we find a relatively simple-looking rear light, built up from 202 LED modules, which covers the entire width of the rear. The SUV has soft-close doors with recessed handles and a more than 70 centimeters large glass panoramic roof that can be opened. Nio ES7 Inside – of course – two digital displays determine the appearance. The OLED screen in the center of the dashboard measures 12.8 inches. Above it you will find Nomi, a visualization of the digital assistant. The luggage compartment has a capacity of 658 liters. Extensively electrically ventilated, heated and adjustable seats in the front with seat extensions? Of the lot, the same goes for an electrically adjustable and heated rear seat with, among other things, an adjustable backrest. Thanks to 33 sensors, including Lidar sensors, cameras and radar systems – and smart software, the ES7 should also be able to drive autonomously. More pampering? Secure. There is something that Nio calls ‘PanoCinema’, a system that – if the occupants are wearing VR glasses – optically projects a more than 5 meters large screen 6 meters away in front of the car. Watching a movie in a parking lot is therefore no problem. Nio says he assumes that the ES7 just manages to get 5 stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests. Nio has used carbon fiber and aluminum for the base of the car. The starting price of the ES7 in China is converted to € 66,275 for the version with 75 kWh battery. It is not yet known when Nio will enter the Dutch market with its first models. Undoubtedly, Audi is not happy with the model name of this SUV. The brand is currently filing a lawsuit against Nio for its ES6 and ES8, cars whose names Audi thinks are too similar to S6 and S8. According to the same vision, the ES7 would of course look too much like S7.
