Football player Lieke Martens says goodbye to FC Barcelona after five years. The 29-year-old football star reports this on Instagram on Thursday evening.
“After five years at this fantastic club in this beautiful city, I have decided to say goodbye and embark on a new adventure,” she writes. Martens had an expiring contract in Barcelona and, according to Spanish media, appears to be on his way to Paris Saint-Germain. “I came to FC Barcelona at a time when the club was embarking on an ambitious project to become a leader in the world of women’s football. We have worked hard and I believe we have achieved the goals we set five years ago.”
“Winning the Champions League was an absolute highlight, as was winning the FIFA Worlds Best Player Award while playing for Barcelona. It’s great to be a part of the history of this club,” Martens wrote.
Martens took the ‘double’ with FC Barcelona last season: the Catalan football players won the national title and the Spanish cup. They lost 3-1 to Olympique Lyon in the Champions League final.
In the 2020-2021 season, she won the Champions League with Barcelona by beating Chelsea 4-0 in the final.
