In the first four months of this year, a total of 2,440,672 traffic violations were detected, the CJIB reports. That is an increase of more than nine percent compared to the same period last year, when there were 2,233,562. The first months of last year were largely influenced by the lockdown and curfew, the CJIB also sees the corona measures as an important reason that the number of violations was lower last year. Speeding is still the most commonly observed traffic violation. 1,981,082 fines were issued for this. Last year there were 1,815,021, more than 9 percent less. No fewer than 918,035 of the speeding violations were detected with a speed camera, more than 46 percent. 29 percent of speeding violations were detected by section control, 22 percent with mobile radar sets. Although the number of violations increased, the number of stops actually decreased. This year, through April, there were 146,631 stops, compared to 168,483 in that period last year. The CJIB declares that as follows: "This will partly be the result of priority choices made by local authorities and the police when deploying capacity. Fewer fines were also issued during the actions of police unions for a new collective labor agreement and instead drivers were given a warning more often when they stopped."
Foreigners also more often screwed up The increase in the number of traffic violations detected by foreigners is a lot more substantial. While the total number rose by more than 9 percent, the increase among foreign directors is no less than 36 percent. In total, this concerns 227,642 violations. The AD reports, based on figures from the CJIB, that Germans are leading the way, even though they are also the most represented foreigners on our roads. Our eastern neighbors accounted for 70,625 violations in the first four months of this year. Just over 31 percent of all traffic offenses committed by foreigners. Again, the increase can largely be explained on the basis of last year’s corona measures. In the first four months of 2021, there was of course much less foreign recreational traffic in our country.
