You can probably remember a number of Chinese cars that resembled European creations like two drops of water. There were, for example, the Range Rover Evoque lookalike from Landwind, the Zotye SR8 that strongly resembles a Porsche Macan, but also a real Aston Martin Cygnet imitation of Dojo. The Chinese Nio, which is also spreading its wings here in Europe, takes a neater approach in that regard. With the ES6 and ES8, it has sailed its own course in terms of design. Nevertheless, Nio is now facing a lawsuit brought by Audi. According to Handelsblatt, Audi believes that Nio infringes the trademark rights it holds for the names S6 and S8, the sporty (sub) top versions of the A6 and A8 respectively. Audi has therefore now filed a lawsuit in the Munich court to prevent Nio from naming his two electric SUVs. It is questionable whether it makes sense, since the names are of course not exactly the same. That was the case, for example, with the BMW XM and Citroën XM, about which BMW and Citroën – before BMW used that name – verbally agreed. You could pronounce ES6 and ES8 as S6 and S8, but that may be the main problem for Audi.
