Since 2014, models from the BMW Group have been rolling off the production line at VDL Nedcar in Born. It started with subsidiary brand Mini, for which VDL Nedcar first built the three-door, since 2015 also the Mini Cabrio and in 2016 the Countryman was added. Finally, in 2017 the production of the BMW X1 ended up in Born. An increasingly extensive production, therefore, with which an important milestone has been reached today. A gray Mini Countryman is in fact the millionth car built in Born on behalf of the BMW Group. Naturally, this special moment was taken into consideration in the factory. With more than 4,000 employees, the happy moment was celebrated and of course a photo was taken with the Mini in question. “Building a million cars for a premium brand like BMW, of course, says something about the craftsmanship of our employees. Since the collaboration with BMW Group was started eight years ago, our employees in Born have excelled in quality, flexibility and delivery reliability. This milestone is a major achievement and top-class craftsmanship that we can all be justifiably proud of,” says VDL Nedcar director John van Soerland. The BMW Group is also making itself heard. Frank Bachmann, factory director in Regensburg, Germany, explains: “The development of VDL Nedcar is impressive when it comes to performance and reliability and the professional way in which the factory builds our cars. That is something VDL Nedcar and its employees can be proud of.” The beautiful milestone will come in uncertain times for VDL Nedcar. The production contract with the BMW Group will expire next year and then there must be another client. A new client seemed to have been found in the form of Canoo, but that fell through. VDL Nedcar is still in talks with Rivian about the production of its electric pick-ups and SUVs. There is no white smoke in Born yet, but it was recently announced that Rivian is opening a distribution center in Waalwijk. Who knows, that may be a small sign that more will happen around Rivian in the Netherlands.
