To describe the engine noise, the South African press made a comparison with the animals living in the country. ‘Car’ wrote in 1984 that the engine of the Alfa GTV6 3.0 roars like a leopard when it hits the tracks. And that happened regularly. After all, the coupé developed by Alfa Romeo South Africa had an important task: to finally beat BMW in the country’s touring car championship. With the help of Arese Against the 535i, no herb seemed to have been washed at the time. In collaboration with Alfa Romeo Arese, the South Africans turned the 2.5-litre into a 3.0-litre. The injection system gave way to large Dell’Orto carburettors. Autodelta, also known for the turbo version of the Giulietta of the 1980s, supplied different cylinder heads and pistons as well as a modified crankshaft. A larger intake manifold, together with the large intake in the hood, provided a better supply of fresh air to the engine. Homologation series All efforts paid off. Already at the first race participation in 1983 at the Kyalami circuit, the GTV6 3.0 left all other cars in the dust. In 1984 and 1985 a homologation series of 212 copies was built for public roads. With a top speed of 225.2 km/h (yes, they were extremely meticulous with Alfa Romeo in that measurement), the Giugiaro coupe was at the time the fastest car ever built in South Africa. More aggressive sound It is especially the sound produced by the 3.0-litre that distinguishes it from the 2.5-litre. He sounds a lot more aggressive. The flexibility has also improved considerably. This makes the biggest drawback of the GTV less noticeable: the transmission. Because it is coupled to the rear axle as a result of the transaxle construction, the shift rods are extremely long. This ensures that any form of precision is nipped in the bud in advance. Of course, we prefer to listen to the leopard roar instead of the creaking of gears.
