Are you planning a trip or a trip to Austria? Beware of wheelies! The Austrian government recently amended the Motor Vehicles Act, the equivalent of our highway code, and all “stunts” on two wheels will be severely punished.
The Motor Vehicles Act says that “there must always be contact between the road surface and all wheels” in other words, jumps, wheelies and stubble are prohibited. To these are added “acceleration or braking with excessive slippage of one or more wheels for a prolonged period of time” or skidding and burnout.
All these maneuvers, whether carried out on roads open to traffic, or in isolated areas (including private parking lots), will be punished with a fine that starts at 300 euros and can go up to 10,000 euros. Furthermore, if the police believe that the infringement can be repeated, they can impound the motorcycle for up to 72 hours.
