Italy rejected in innovation
It can’t be said to be a big surprise, but reading it always hurts: Italy ranks fifth from last on 22 advanced countries as regards the innovation ecosystem. This is what emerges from the 2022 Report “Super Smart Society: towards a more sustainable, resilient and human centric future“, Made by Innotech Community of The European House – Ambrosetti. Which means that keywords such as robotics, bioeconomy, metaverse, digitalization of PAdecarbonization and ecological transition are the challenges from which to exploit the opportunities of one Super Smart Society and to develop a sustainable, resilient and human-centric society in the coming years. The result of the Ambrosetti survey
According to the update of theAmbrosetti Innosystem Index (AII)in the ecosystem of innovation, Italy is in the rear, placing itself in fifth from last position (al 18th place with a score of 3.3). The United States emerged in first place, with a score of 5.1 and in second place, Israel, Germany And Austria with a score of 4.6. Investments in research and development are among the fundamental elements. Germany is ahead in Europe with 105.9 billionmore than four times those of Italy (25.4 billion euros). Considering the global context and comparing investments in R&D to the GDP, Italy does not fall within the world top 15, positioning itself below the EU27 average (2.2%) with 1.5% of GDP destined for research.
Promoted as academic research
Good in regards to the efficiency and quality of academic research: Italy confirms its excellence with 1,594 citations for every 100 researchers. On the other hand, the ability to translate scientific excellence into economic and industrial value through the registration of patents is critical (19th place) and bad also as regards the rate of net student mobility, compared to which yes place as last Country with a positive net balance between incoming and outgoing students.
IIA 2022 finally, it measured the ability of an ecosystem to protect the innovation produced and to transform innovative ideas into new business realities. As of December 31, 2021, Italy counts 14,077 start-ups innovative companies registered in the business register, most of which (75.7%) operate in business services. The two most important poles in the country are confirmed as Rome and Milan, where the 18.7% and 10.9% of total startups. Finally, the Report takes into account the data emerging from the Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) of the European Commission: in 2021 Italy is below the EU average of 5.18 points. In the coming years, it will therefore be essential to have effective programming e greater investments especially regarding Human Capital, Connectivity, Digital Public Services and Integration of Digital Technologies.
De Molli: “There are great opportunities to be seized”
“It emerges from the report an Italy with some important strengthslike the bioeconomy and the ability of our researchers to produce scientific excellence, but at the same braking time and with great opportunities to be seized as regards the ability to build a solid ecosystem of innovation, an essential condition for accelerating the path towards sustainable development and Super Smart Society“, explains Valerio De Molli, Managing Partner & CEO of The European House – Ambrosetti. “To provide a compass for the business community and policy makers and guide the country’s future strategic choices in the field of innovation, we make four programmatic proposals in the Report. First of all, the resources of the PNRR must be directed towards projects capable of maximizing the potential of innovation that already exists in the country. Secondly, to create a virtuous mechanism to translate our primacy of scientific research into concrete innovation, entrusting a key role to the Technology Transfer Offices. It is then necessary to transform Italy into aVillage for Unicorns‘, promoting reforms in support of innovative entrepreneurship and funding for Venture Capital.
