YouTuber JerryRigEverything, known for disassembling and seeing the durability of different electronic objects, recently tested Valve’s Steam Deck and subjected it to different scratch, fire and flexibility tests. The laptop survived being bent and set on fire with ease. But it suffered most from being scratched, where its screen was not able to withstand the tests.
Despite resisting bending and fire tests on the screen, its weak point is the improved screen of the 512 GB version, which did not withstand scratch tests.
The YouTuber noted that the anti-glare screen isn’t as good in bright light, and thinks it would have been better if Valve added a bit more brightness to the screen to make it more visible when in a well-lit environment.
According to Jerry, the only really weak part of the steam deck would be its screen, the case that was subjected to the same scratch test, resisted better, as well as the buttons, which continued to work and the youtuber assures that it will be impossible for players erase the letters on the buttons, even after years of use.
For the litmus test, Jerry pressed a lighter directly against the console’s IPS panel for 20 seconds to see if any thermal damage occurred. The pixels surrounding the flame turned black under the immense heat for several seconds, but returned to their natural color state after only a few seconds as if nothing had happened. This test demonstrates that the Steam Deck’s IPS display can withstand high temperatures without permanent damage.
To finish the video, the youtuber performed a bending test, where he tried to bend the portable console in half, despite using all the force he could, it turned out to be impossible. The casing flexed a bit under the pressure, but that was all that happened, not a slight creak could be heard from the plastic casing.
