Video games based on superheroes are in fashion, but it is a fact that having important licenses and characters is not a guarantee of success. Months ago we learned that Daybreak Games, developers of DC Universe Online, were working on a new Marvel MMO.
The AAA project had gone through some difficulties, but was still going strong. Unfortunately, there is bad news for all the fans who were waiting for the project. We tell you this since EnaD Global 7, parent company of Daybreak Games, announced the cancellation of the MMO.

Why was the development of the Marvel MMO canceled?
According to the details, the companies were going to invest around $50 million to develop and support the game for the next few years. However, an exhaustive review of the risks of the project and its investment was made, and it was concluded that it was better to take a step back and cancel it.
“EG7 announced today that it will discontinue development of the Marvel project at Daybreak Games. Based on the reassessment of the development risk profile, investment size and long-term product portfolio strategy for the group, the board decided to change development priorities and reallocate resources to focus on long-term alternatives. the studios said in a statement.
The developers now plan to invest that money in smaller-scale projects that are also based on popular franchises, such as The Lord of the Rings, the aforementioned DC Universe Online, as well as new IP.
“Being one of the long-term investments, the change in the Marvel project plan will not affect revenues and benefits in the short and medium term, except for the impact on the balance sheet and income statements related to amortization,” added EG7.
Several Marvel games are already on the way
As you know, projects like Marvel’s Avengers have failed miserably, while games like Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy fell short of financial expectations. On the other hand, installments of Marvel’s Spider-Man have been a success and important games like Marvel’s Midnight Suns are already on the way.
Additionally, Insomniac Games has Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Marvel’s Wolverine on their hands. As if that were not enough, Amy Hennig, industry veteran and director of Skydance New Media, prepares an AAA from Marvel that has not been revealed.
