Gaming is wonderful, there is no doubt about that. However, it is undeniable that it can generate dependency if there is no restraint on the part of the player. We must remember that the World Health Organization classified video game disorder as a mental illness in 2018. With this on the table, a young man recently recognized an addiction problem and took drastic action to combat it.
According to the Dexerto portal, the user Fl4k_Drifter uploaded a video to his personal Twitter account where it was possible to see how he took his laptop, which showed the Overwatch main menu, and threw it into a nearby lake.

The curious footage, as expected, gained great visibility in the last few hours and impacted the multiplayer video game community. Given this, the young man of only 19 years decided to eliminate it, but he took the time to answer some doubts from Internet users and, in the process, explain his addiction problem.
“It wasn’t a hobby, it was an addiction I couldn’t get rid of,” Overwatch player tells his story
Fl4k_Drifter recounts that he used to play the Blizzard title almost every day since its release in 2016. In a post on Twitter, he explains that he began to develop a dependency, which significantly affected his school performance.
“The community mixed in with the game kept me hooked, and I didn’t want to do anything else. It got in the way of my college courses. I just don’t have good discipline,” the player commented in response to a social media user.
My parents wouldn’t let me bring my PC to college. Got a laptop and games ever single day nonstop. Skipped classes, didn’t go outside, nothing but OW. Simply uninstalling it would have resulted in my reinstalling it within a few days. The game made me withdraw from my semester.

I gotcha. I know the feeling. maybes it’s because I have kids that depend on me I was able to control it. being in college I could see it being harder to keep away from the game

The young man continues with his story and comments that, because his parents did not allow him to take his PC to school, he decided to buy a laptop. This caused him to start playing Overwatch while skipping class, which inevitably led to him missing the semester.
“Uninstalling it would have no results, because I would reinstall it in a few days (…) It wasn’t a hobby, it was an addiction that I couldn’t get rid of; like a drug addiction with fewer health factors,” he assured.
In case you missed it: Young man was hospitalized and needed “detoxification” for his addiction to Fortnite
On the other hand, Fl4k_Drifter confessed that his therapist compared his addiction to Overwatch to being addicted to cocaine, one of the drugs with the highest dependency rate.
In any case, many players and members of the hero shooter community expressed their solidarity and good wishes towards the player. Of course, there were also those who, mistakenly, affirmed that it was “foolish” for someone to be addicted to the video game and that it was only enough to uninstall it to eradicate the problem.
But tell us, what do you think of this situation? Do you think the drastic measure the player took will have an effect? Let us read you in the comments.
