ROME, MAY 24 – “Institutions are called upon to make the Italian welfare system more equitable, sustainable and efficient, ensuring in particular the territorial and generational rebalancing of social benefits. In this context, the NRP is an important driving force because it allocates significant resources for the modernization and strengthening of some pillars of our welfare state. Resources that must be used effectively, to strengthen social cohesion without which our own democracy would be at risk ”. This was stated by the President of the Chamber Roberto Fico in a video message at the presentation of the Report on the welfare state. “The welfare state – says Fico – is a democratic and economic pillar. It constitutes the most direct implementation of the principles of solidarity, protection of human dignity and inclusion. And it is one of the most recognizable features of the very identity of Europe. In Italy, as in other countries, there has certainly been a serious delay in social policies in tackling inequalities, unemployment and the loss of purchasing power of wages. And above all, what should be the guiding principle in the redesign of social policies: intergenerational solidarity was not taken into account, if not in a marginal way. The youngest continue to benefit from protections that are not comparable to those of older citizens ”, he concludes. (HANDLE).
