Twenty years ago, Volkswagen’s Golf team decided to go crazy again. They did that a quarter of a century earlier than once with the introduction of the GTI, but in its fourth generation, that hothatch was only lukewarm. So it had to be even hotter, and the engineers found the solution in a 241 hp strong 3.2-liter VR6 engine and four-wheel drive. The Golf R32 was born, and since then not a Golf generation has passed without an R derivative. Those two decades of über-Golfjes want to honor this ’20 Years’ version.
13 hp and Performance Pack
They do not do that in Wolfsburg by again mounting an innovative V6 the size of a four-cylinder under the hood, although that does not mean that the mechanics have been sitting still. A subtle engine upgrade frees an additional 13 horses from the usual 2.0-litre TSI block, making this 333 hp pocket rocket instantly the most powerful production Golf ever. As usual, that power is controlled by four-wheel drive, although it initially sets the front wheels ablaze.
That extra push is not the only advantage of this ’20 Years’ version, because your copy also gets Volkswagen’s R-Performance package, which you otherwise have to pay extra for. That not only unleashes a top speed of 270 km/h (instead of the standard 250 km/h) but also puts the Special and Drift modes at your fingertips. With the regular Golf R you also get a spoiler of a spoiler and 19-inch Estoril rims with that upgrade, and you will also find them on this festive edition.
Limited edition (in time)
However, do not think that your special edition has to look just like every regular Golf R, because the connoisseur will certainly distinguish it. For example, Volkswagen gives you the option to provide the rims of your R ’20 Years’ with a blue accent line on the spokes, and the same color also returns on the mirror caps. The otherwise silver-colored R logos get a similar treatment, and inside there are more Rs than you can count. In addition, the dashboard is covered with real carbon fiber — a first in Golf country.
They do not let you know exactly how many copies Volkswagen will make of this strongest Golf ever. However, they do have a deadline for the production of this special hothatch, because they will build it from mid-2022 to mid-2023. We can’t give a price tag for this Golf R ’20 Years’ yet, and it’s not even certain yet. whether the model will be marketed in Belgium. So to be continued, or let’s hope…
