Anyone who supports Borussia Mönchengladbach will be happy that the 2021/22 season is finally over. Overall, they had promised a lot more on the Lower Rhine and looked at the international ranks – but they were clearly missed. Many players fell short of expectations and their opportunities.
90min evaluates the performance of Borussia – in the first part it is the defensive’s turn:
Yan Summers:
By far the best Gladbacher in the past season. Sommer was the only player in normal form in many games and saved a number of points with strong saves. If the keeper hadn’t been in such a good mood, the season might have been even worse.
Rating: 9/10
Tobias Sippel, Jan Olschowsky:
After the outstanding summer, the substitute keepers remained without assignments.
Therefore Without rating
Matthew Ginter:
Nominally Gladbach’s best central defender, but Ginter’s uncertain contractual situation was evident for long stretches of the season. He had a highlight game here and there, such as the 2-1 win against Bayern at the start of the second half of the season, when he was simply outstanding – but in too many games Ginter made positional mistakes, lack of concentration and weak duels.
Rating: 5/10
Nico Elvedi:
Basically Ginter’s decal – only that his shape fluctuations can’t be explained by his unclear contractual situation. He oscillated too often between district and world class, as the saying goes; in the new season Elvedi has to bring consistency. He certainly has what it takes to be a tough defender.
Rating 5/10
Tony Jantschke:
The Gladbach football god was more or less dispensable during the season under Adi Hütter – he only had three appearances in the end. The 32-year-old is a crowd favorite, but has probably passed his peak in sport.
Rating 4/10
Jordan Beyer:
A bright spot of the Gladbach season. Beyer had not seen any country under Rose last season – but Hütter relied on the youngster. The homegrown player was unlucky in that he had to be sidelined for weeks with a muscle injury, but when Beyer was fit he was often Gladbach’s best central defender. That gives hope for more.
Rating 7/10
Marvin Friedrich:
Came in winter to be set up as Ginter successor. However, Friedrich’s start at Borussia-Park was a bumpy one – he conceded two penalties immediately after arrival and often didn’t make a happy impression after that. After that, he was also disabled by a Covid-19 infection. After getting used to it, there must be more to come in the new season.
Rating 4/10
Mamadou Doucoure:
The bad luck with injuries stayed with him this season.
Therefore Without rating
Stefan Lainer:
The start of the season couldn’t have been worse for Lainer, because he was out for weeks after the second day of play with a broken ankle. The first half of the season was more or less over. In the second half of the season, ‘Stevie’ also noticed the long break (unsurprisingly) – but the longer it went, the more momentum he got into. The Austrian should be in top form again in 2022/23.
valuation 6/10
Joe Scally:
The US boy had a brilliant start to the season and made an excellent impression in the first half of the season. After that, Scally slacked off a bit, but what he showed was really good for his first full season in the Bundesliga.
Rating 7/10
The Bensebaini framework:
Gladbach’s mentality monster was not able to constantly put his horsepower on the pitch and was also often moved back and forth between left and central defense. All in all a solid season – but by his standards there should have been more.
Rating 6/10
Luca Netz:
Similar to Scally, the network was also reliable – even though he is Gladbach’s youngest. The new signing from Hertha made a lot of steam on his left side and finally recorded four assists.
Rating 7/10
