The annual party of the rich and powerful of this earth starts today in Davos, Switzerland. The World Economic Forum, a kind of talk club for good intentions, is opened at a quarter to 11 by Klaus Schwab. Half an hour later, the first big hit: Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky.

The professional fate of Menno Snel is in the hands of fellow party member Sigrid Kaag. Today she has to lobby her European finance ministers for Snel as the new boss for the European emergency fund ESM. There are still two candidates: a Portuguese and an Italian. They don’t necessarily have to figure it out today: the appointment is scheduled for June 16.

A bit of history is being written in Ukraine today. The first Russian soldier to stand trial for war crimes will be sentenced today. Vadim Shishimarin is suspected of shooting a 62-year-old man on a bicycle.
