A new patent filed by BMW shows mobile aerodynamic appendages designed to increase ride comfort without penalizing the aerodynamic coefficient. This solution is somewhat reminiscent of the electric spoilers of the Moto Guzzi V 100 Mandello (two movable deflectors positioned between the tank and the fairing managed by servomotors), but it is something completely different.
Basically, BMW talks about two possible modes of operation of this new system: on the one hand, i Spring-controlled air deflectors, which are designed to keep wind and rain away from the driver at low speeds. Being managed by springs, these appendages are able to gradually close as the aerodynamic pressure given by the forward speed increases. Exactly the opposite, therefore, of the Guzzi system, where the electrically extending fins should offer greater protection from the wind at higher speeds. In the same patent, BMW describes a second variant of these deflectors: fixed wings on the fairing with flexible or elastic elements in the backwhich change shape at higher speeds.
This new BMW patent was presented with three movable deflectors placed at different heights on the two sides of the bike and in the front area. The “adaptive aerodynamic fins” were shown on a model of the GS family. That the new BMW R 1300 GS (here the first spy photos) will use this system? It is still too early to say, but what is certain is that a similar device can adapt to very different models.
