Third challenge between the two: in both matches already played the Italian was defeated
One-handed backhand challenge. The draw for Roland Garros was not benevolent with Lorenzo Musetti: for the player from Carrara there is the top seed number 4 and among the players with title ambitions, Stefanos Tsitsipas. The son of Apostolos is the main favorite to reach the final from the bottom of the board, considering that in the other half there are Djokovic, Nadal and Alcaraz: last year, the Greek went one step away from triumph at Roland Garros , with the final lost to Nole after winning the first two sets. But beware of Lorenzo, who last season shone on the land of Paris.
Musetti returns to the tournament where he enchanted the world. In 2021, the Carrara tennis player reached the round of 16 after beating Goffin, Nishioka and Cecchinato. Not only that: Lorenzo went ahead two sets against Djokovic on Philippe-Chatrier, before suffering the angry return of the Serbian and leaving the field in the fifth set due to injury. From that moment, however, Musetti’s 2021 has been complicated. The season on clay seemed to have restored confidence to Simone Tartarini’s pupil, but the number 66 in the world was forced to miss the Internazionali d’Italia due to a problem in his left thigh.
In addition to the caliber of the opponent, therefore, we must also consider the physical condition of Musetti: how does he get to Roland Garros? Tsitsipas will put Lorenzo to the test: the Greek is one of the strongest players in the world on clay, this year he won in Monte Carlo and reached the final in Rome, with the defeat against Djokovic. In between the quarter-finals in Barcelona and the semifinal in Madrid, lost to Sascha Zverev in three sets. The two players will face each other for the third time in their career, with the first two matches won by Tsitsipas in 2021: on the hard courts of Acapulco and on clay in Lyon, both times in the semifinals. In the only precedent on red, Musetti managed to snatch a set from his opponent: 4-6 6-3 6-0 the final score.
