A new trailer for Mutiversus, Warner’s Smash Bros.-esque fighting/platform game, came out this week. Multiple playable characters appeared in the new promotional video, such as Batman, Shaggy, Bugs Bunny, Tom and Jerry, Superman, etc. But what caught the attention of the fans, and it seems that it was not taken in a good way, was the inclusion of the Iron Giant.
The criticism arose because the character seems out of place in a fighting game, due to being seen as a “warm-hearted pacifist”. Although there is currently no information on his moves in the game, fans are already concerned that his inclusion could tarnish his image.
The PC Gamer medium asked the game’s director, Tony Huynh, about the inclusion of the character from the 1999 film: “We are starting with this as an alternative universe. The characters are drawn from everywhere. And also, if you understand the history From the Iron Giant, there are multiple Iron Giants. Having said that, the backstory is that this Iron Giant is learning from Superman, our game is inherently focused on cooperation and protecting your ally.”
“We want to take this kind of criticism into account,” Huynh added. “So if you’re not satisfied, we’d like to hear from you, but a lot of the game mechanics and character mechanics haven’t been revealed yet either. So that might help too.”
Multiversus will be out on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC and will have an open beta on July 2.
