The football players of Olympique Lyon have won the Champions League for women for the eighth time. The French team defeated defending champion FC Barcelona in the final 3-1. Lyon, where the Orange internationals Daniëlle van de Donk and Damaris Egurrola remained on the bench, already led 3-0 in the Juventus stadium after just over half an hour of play.
Lieke Martens was allowed to fill in for Barcelona after an hour. The Orange-international, who made her comeback last week after an injury, was unable to bring the Spanish champion back into the game. Last year, Martens played a leading role in the 4-0 final against Chelsea.
Barcelona won all competition matches in their own country this season and eliminated Real Madrid and VfL Wolfsburg on the way to the final of the Champions League. However, the Catalan women were overrun by Lyon in the first half hour in Turin.
