With the pandemic, several movies were released directly on streaming, but Tom Cruise was categorical in saying that he would never allow this to happen with “Top Gun: Maverick”.
Originally slated for June 24, 2020, “Top Gun: Maverick,” the sequel to the iconic 1986 film, is about to hit theaters. The film was delayed as a consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic, which affected film production and also cinemas around the world.
Now, Tom Cruise attended the premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, and there he was asked if he ever considered a streaming release for “Top Gun: Maverick”: “That wouldn’t happen. Never,” said the actor. After applause from the audience for the categorical response, Cruise elaborated. “I spent a lot of time with theater owners. The people who serve popcorn, the ones who make it happen.”

Cruise also said that he doesn’t create his films thinking about releases on streaming platforms and that he makes “films for the big screen”. Furthermore, he confessed that he goes to the movies in secret “wearing my cap” and that he sits “in the audience like everyone else”.
Synopsis for “Top Gun: Maverick”: “After more than 30 years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell is back, pushing the limits as a courageous test pilot.
