The Covid shelter curve accelerates the descent. In the week, 10-17 May, the total number of hospitalized patients, both in the ordinary wards and in the intensive care units, was reduced by 14.9%: a double decrease compared to that of the period 3-10 May when the decrease had been 7.5%. This is what emerges from the survey of sentinel hospitals of the Italian Federation of Healthcare and Hospitals (Fiaso), which highlights how cases in ordinary wards have been reduced by 15% and in intensive care by 14.8%. In intensive care, the percentage of no vax patients who have contracted severe Covid is 24%.
The decline in pediatric hospitalizations also continues. In the survey of 17 May in the four pediatric hospitals and in the pediatric wards of the hospitals belonging to the Fiaso sentinel network, a 15.9% reduction in Covid patients was observed. Children up to 4 years are still the majority of hospitalized under 18 or 65% of patients (16% are between 0 and 6 months); 19% of hospitalized patients are between 5 and 11 years old, while 16% are between 12 and 18 years old.
Getting vaccinated against Covid-19 after contracting the infection can be the right move to reduce the risk of Long Covid. This is what emerges from a large study conducted in the United Kingdom and published in the British Medical Journal. The researchers’ work began with a recent survey by the UK’s National Statistical Office, which found that 44% of people who contracted the disease still had symptoms a year later, in most of them. cases at levels so intense that their daily activities are limited. However, monitoring of 28,356 adults between the ages of 18 and 69 showed that those who received at least one dose of the vaccine after contracting the infection had a lower risk of developing Long Covid.
In particular, during the monitoring, which lasted seven months (from February to September 2021), 24% of the sample had reported symptoms of Long Covid. However, a more in-depth analysis showed that a first dose of vaccine administered after infection reduced the risk of developing Long Covid symptoms by 13%. A second dose lowered the odds further by 9%. However, more research will be needed for researchers to better understand the relationship between vaccination and Long Covid and the biological mechanisms underlying any improvement in symptoms after vaccination.
Meanwhile, the second tranche of fines aimed at over 50s not vaccinated with anti-Covid serum is on the way. Another 600 thousand fines, which are added to the first 600 thousand of last month, would have been imposed (or are being sent in these days): it is a total of 1 million and 200 thousand penalties so far. A third tranche is expected in the coming weeks. This is what is learned from sources of the Ministry of Health. There would have been several complaints from people who would have specified that they had vaccinated despite the arrival of the fine: in these cases you have 10 days to show the vaccination documentation.
