Did you think the 1,088 hp electric racing car that Porsche just presented was a bit meager? Then this is your moment, because none other than rally driver and drift champion Ken Block has his entry for the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb suggested. That is also a Porsche, but it manages to bring no less than 1,400 horsepower to its four wheels. What a little ambition and an old-fashioned combustion engine with two turbos can’t all achieve…
Hoonipigasus-Porsche
In the back of this Porsche 912 from 1966 is no longer a modest four-cylinder, but a 4.0 liter flat six with two turbos screwed against its air intakes. The rest of the car was also completely custom-made, so that those 1,400 horses only have to move one ton of weight. We will not hear more specifications yet, although we can tell you that this racing car has a name: Hoonipigasus. That’s a portmanteau of “Hoonigan,” Ken Block’s racing team, “Pig,” a reference to a pink Porsche Le Mans racer from 1971, and “Pegasus,” the winged horse of Greek mythology.

The Race To The Clouds — because that’s what the Pikes Peak ascent is also called — consists of 156 turns and stretches over a distance of about 20 kilometers. Throughout the race, the pilots climb 1,440 meters in height. The current record is held by Frenchman Romain Dumas who drove a Volkswagen ID R up there in 7 minutes 57 seconds. However, that car competed in the ‘Unlimited’ class, while the Hoonipigasus remains in the ‘Pikes Peak Open’ category in which the cars have yet to be based on production cars. How he fares, you will find out after the race on June 26.
