In its latest internal memorandum, Netflix changed the foundations of the company’s culture, and in the part where it refers to the artistic expression of its workers, it calls for “if you don’t like our content you can quit.”
After Netflix revealed in its report for the first quarter of 2022 that its subscriptions were reduced by 200,000 in the period from January to March. The streaming giant is back in the news after the controversial message to its employees, according to Variety, the company is changing its corporate culture guidelines for the first time since 2017.
“Not everyone will like or agree with all of the content on our service,” the message reads. “We let viewers decide what’s appropriate for them, rather than Netflix censoring specific artists or voices.”
Elon Musk, who is in the midst of buying the social network Twitter, supported Netflix’s message. “Nice move from @netflix,” he wrote on his twitter account.

“Not everyone will like, or agree with, everything on our service. While each title is different, we approach them based on the same set of principles; we support the artistic expression of the creators we choose to work with; we program for a diversity of audiences and tastes; and we let the viewers decide what is appropriate for them, instead of Netflix censoring specific artists or voices”, this would be the main reason behind the change in the company’s culture.
“Depending on your role, you may need to work on content that you perceive to be harmful. If you find it difficult to support our breadth of content, Netflix may not be the best place for you,” the “artistic expression” section concludes.
The company has been thinking about changing its corporate culture for the past 18 months, it told The Wall Street Journal. The latest change is intended to help prospective employees “make better-informed decisions about whether Netflix is the right company for them.”
