Ransomware attacks are really dangerous and can have really serious consequences. Don’t you believe us? You’ll probably change your mind once we tell you that such a cyberattack was responsible for shutting down a US university.
What happens is that Lincoln College, a university in the United States, informed the Illinois Department of Higher Education that it will close permanently as of May 13. This after they fell victim to a ransomware attack that took months to resolve. With this it will become the first university to close due to such an attack.
Lincoln College was the victim of a cyber attack in December of last year. The attack made them unable to use their computers and this affected intake activities, as well as being unable to access their database.
All systems necessary for recruitment, retention, and fundraising efforts were inoperable. Fortunately, no personal information was exposed. Once fully restored in March 2022, projections will show a significant enrollment shortfall, requiring a transformative donation or partnership to sustain Lincoln College beyond the current semester.
The ransomware attack was the last straw
Now, it is important to make it clear that the ransomware attack was not the only thing that caused the closure of this university. For a long time the educational institution had been dragging with some problems and the cyberattack turned out to be the straw that broke the camel’s back.
Although during 2019 they had a number of students that broke their internal records, the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) changed everything. What happens is that many students dropped out of the university in this period, which severely affected their financial status.
This situation, together with the cyberattack, caused the university to lack the necessary funds to operate and they were left with no way to generate income. With this, the 157-year-old institution came to an unfortunate end.
What do you think about this new? Do you think it’s a tragic end for this institution? Tell us in the comments.
