PEC Zwolle captain Bram van Polen says he owes the fans of the club from Zwolle an apology after the relegation from the Eredivisie. PEC lost 2-0 to Sparta and will play in the Kitchen Champion Division next season, much to the disappointment of Van Polen (36).
“I just snapped for a while and it’s like I’ve been in a grieving process,” Van Polen said in front of the ESPN camera. “We were already dead and buried during the winter break, but after the winter break we did everything we could. We ruined it in the first half of the season and that cost us dearly.”
Van Polen said he felt “empty”. “I have to apologize to everyone who cares about the club. I would have liked to give people a little more. Jobs are at stake in relegation.”
PEC quickly faced a 2-0 deficit against Sparta and was unable to score in the remainder. “I think we played into their hands by finding out so quickly. After that we were just attacking, while they were dangerous on the counter. We didn’t create many concrete opportunities.”
PEC is the lowest scoring team this season with 25 goals. The team has won only seven times this season and is currently on 27 points with one round to go.
