Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel fears that he will not be able to rely on Mateo Kovacic on Saturday at Wembley in the FA Cup final against Liverpool. The Croatian midfielder suffered an ankle injury in the 3-0 league win at Leeds United on Wednesday after a rough tackle by Daniel James, who had to go off the field with a red card.
Kovacic tried to play for a while after an injury treatment, but soon had to be replaced with a significant swelling on his left ankle that folded over. “He’s in a lot of pain,” Tuchel said. “I am a trainer and not a medical expert, but I think the chances are very small that he can participate in the cup final. Mateo fears the same. But maybe a miracle will happen, we are trying to make that possible.” Kovacic is a fixture with the ‘Blues’.
Chelsea took a big step towards qualification for the Champions League with the win over Leeds United. Tuchel’s side is now firmly in third place in the Premier League.
Chelsea and Liverpool also faced each other in the final of the League Cup at the end of February, when the ‘Reds’ won via penalties.
