There was no shortage of affordable coupes in the 1990s. We put two together exactly thirty years ago, the Hyundai Scoupé and the Mazda 323 F (a five-door with a coupe-like appearance), to see which of these two was the best choice if you also have a bit of a practical usable car.
Hyundai was still a brand in the early 90s that still had a lot to gain in Europe. Nowadays it is impossible to imagine life without it, back then it was different. With the Scoupé, the South Koreans put down a car that was supposed to give the brand a nice image boost. A nicely lined coupe for a reasonable price. ‘A lot for little’ is something we Dutch are often fond of. The Scoupé was therefore relatively successful in our country. In peak year 1991 1,552 were sold. Meanwhile, the Mazda 323 experienced its heyday, with 1990 as the absolute peak year. That year, no fewer than 16,142 323s were sold.
