Between 2015 and 2021, 1,675 children of victims of the Allowance scandal were removed from their homes. This is reported by the Central Bureau of Statistics Wednesday† The institute estimated the number of custodial placements at 1,115 last October.
These figures have now been updated by Statistics Netherlands because the Implementing Body for Recovery of Allowances has supplied new data. The estimate made by Statistics Netherlands last year was based on figures up to and including 2020. More victims have also come forward since the last estimate, according to the institute.
Statistics Netherlands emphasizes that ‘important comments’ must be made with regard to the most recent figures. For example, no causal relationship can be drawn from the figures between the custodial placement and the Allowances affair, because the institute has not conducted any research into the causes of the children’s custodial placement.
