You hear it more often these days, but for the record: Ford has big plans in the electrical field. For example, the electric range should be expanded to 9 models by 2024, five of which are basically commercial vehicles. We already knew the E-Transit, but now it is joined by the more compact E-Transit Custom. And unlike its big brother, this is not just a delivery van we already knew with an electric motor transplanted into the front.
380 kilometers away
This E-Transit Custom is new down to the last screw, even though it still resembles the older example with combustion engine relatively strongly. The resemblance is particularly striking in profile, with its sloping angle at the rear of the shoulder line that almost feels like a van version of BMW’s. Hofmeister nod could see. The rear also radiates Ford (Pro), although the lighting there is now slightly less high upwards. However, the nose has been thoroughly prepared for the future, and that future is clearly electric. Not only do the chic LED daytime running lights stand out, but also the largely closed radiator grille and of course the charging port, which is conveniently incorporated in the nose.
The fact that the grille is still so prominent, however, probably means that versions without ‘E-‘ of this Transit Custom will also appear. For the time being, however, we only get an insight into this purely electric descendant, although Ford is quite scanty with the technical information. They only release that the E-Transit Custom has to be powered up to 380 kilometers on a single charge, because a battery pack of about 80 kWh suggests. Even those who like to tow a trailer with their Transit need not worry, because according to the manufacturer, the towing capacity of the electric versions remains similar to that of the diesels.
The unveiling of this E-Transit Custom is not an isolated incident. This electric van is not only a harbinger for the Transit Custom with combustion engines, but also for the (E-)Tourneo Custom. As usual, this will be the more civilized passenger version of the compact Transit, and that too is coming soon. In addition, this e-Transit can also offer a foretaste of an iconic model from a completely different angle, because Ford and Volkswagen have recently started working together in the field of commercial vehicles. We have already seen a closely related Ford Tourneo Courier and Vokswagen Caddy appear, we know that the upcoming Amarok will be based on the Ford Ranger and there is a good chance that the next Volkswagen Transporter will share its base with this Transit.
In any case, we don’t have to wait long for the arrival of Ford’s own e-Transit Custom. The Blue Oval promises that this electric version will roll off the production line at the factory in Turkey from the second half of 2023. It is not yet known whether the versions with combustion engines will go into production earlier. You will hear more details about the powertrain of this e-Transit in September of this year.
