Although the owners of the Formula 1 team McLaren are in talks with Audi, there is no question of a sale of the racing stable, according to team boss Zak Brown. “Our shareholders are very committed to McLaren. We’ve had talks with Audi, but we’re not for sale,” Brown said ahead of the first Miami Grand Prix.
Last month, the Volkswagen Group approved plans for Audi and Porsche to join Formula 1. Porsche is in far-reaching negotiations with Red Bull to supply the engines to the team of world champion Max Verstappen from 2026.
Audi is currently weighing its options. The German car manufacturer, which also falls under the Volkswagen Group, might want to have its own team. The most logical option is to buy an existing racing stable. Audi is associated with Aston Martin, Williams, Alfa Romeo and also McLaren.
The brand would have 500 million euros left to buy the illustrious British racing stable, but according to Brown that is not an option. “We are the McLaren Formula 1 team and we will remain so.” According to Brown, a collaboration in the field of engines is an option. “When we discuss a partnership, the starting point is always that we remain the owner of the racing stable.” McLaren, which Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo drive, are currently in fourth place in the Constructors’ World Championship.
